Huber Sparkling Rosé from Austria - Picnic Ready Pink
With Mother’s Day in mind, I reached for something bright, bubbly and picnic perfect: the Huber Sparkling Rosé from Austria. It’s pink, it sparkles and it’s wrapped in a label of vivid spring flowers. What’s not to love?
This wine reminded me of the kinds of picnics my own mom used to enjoy. She’s no longer with us but I can picture her: stretched out on a blanket, soaking up the sunshine and trusting me to handle the wine. This bottle would’ve made her smile.
So, what’s in the glass?
The Huber Sparkling Rosé is a dry, non-vintage blend of Pinot Noir and Zweigelt - Austria’s signature red grape. Zweigelt (pronounced TSVYE-gelt) is juicy, friendly and totally underrated. You’ll find it in a handful of other countries (including Canada) but Austria is its true home.
The wine is made using the Charmat method (think: Prosecco), which keeps the bubbles light and the flavours fresh. In Austria, this style is called Sekt, and this version is a beauty.
In the glass: pale salmon pink
On the nose: cherry, raspberry, a touch of spice (think black pepper)
On the palate: dry, soft bubbles, tart red berries, and a whisper of mandarin citrus
Food-wise? It’s picnic gold. It plays nicely with sandwiches, salads, falafel wraps, cheese boards - basically anything you’d toss into a picnic basket. My personal tip? Don’t skimp on the details. Bring a colourful blanket, real glassware, and something sweet. Chocolate covered almonds were my mom’s favourite but strawberries work just as well.
And if you're going alcohol-free, Huber’s Layla - a sparkling Muskateller - is a fantastic option. It’s vibrant, floral, and celebratory without the buzz.
Whether you’re raising a glass to your mom, your memories, or just the return of warm weather, this Austrian sparkler is a joyful way to do it.
