Zorzal Terroir Unico 2018

Reviewed on April 17, 2020

Today is World Malbec Day! Argentina loves its's flagship grape so much that in 2011 they dedicated April 17th as World Malbec Day.

One of Argentina’s claim to fame is that it has some of the highest vineyards in the world. This is a blessing for such a warm climate, as growing vines at higher altitudes means that the conditions are much cooler. The higher the grapes, the more intense the sunlight which helps ripen the grapes. The vineyards for this Zorzal are planted at 1350 meters or 4,400 feet above sea level. You’d think that it would be too cold to grow grapes at this altitude but the granite rocks help to regulate the temperature of the vines, keeping them cool during the day and warm at night.

I always expect Malbec to be smooth and fruity. This one is that and a lot more. It is medium-full bodied, with lively acidity (that’s the soil and the altitude talking), there is a mineral note woven among the dark raspberry, black berry and plum. Two thumbs up!
