Sattlerhof Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Reviewed February 17, 2023

We don’t see much Austrian wine in our market for two reasons – Austria is a small wine producer and Austrians drink most of the wine they make! The Sattler family have been making wine in the South Steiermark region (near the Slovenian border) since 1887. Sauvignon Blanc is the flagship white variety of this region. The topography here is steep vineyards which sets the stage for reliance on manual labour. No machines can work on these slopes! It is no wonder that Sauvignon Blanc from here is more expensive. It is quite a contrast to the Marlborough region in New Zealand which is fairly flat. This wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and is fermented and aged in stainless steel.

Region - South Steiermark, Austria

Colour - pale straw yellow
Nose - floral (apple blossoms), lime, grapefruit and star fruit
Palate – light bodied, crisp, tart, dry with flavours of lime, nectarine, green apple, a hint of saline (salt). Zingy acidity which is textbook Sauvignon Blanc!

Traditional pairing - goat cheese (chèvre)

Modern pairing - Hawkins cheezies
