Henry of Pelham Baco Noir 2018

Reviewed on October 9, 2020

The Henry of Pelham Baco Noir 2018 is Canadian classic. Baco Noir is named after French botanist Francois Baco. He created this hybrid grape in 1902 by crossing Folle Blanche with Grand Glabre. Baco Noir has adapted well to the cool growing climate of Canada, especially in Ontario. It ripens early in the fall and is winter hardy.

My connection with this wine goes back almost 20 years. I appreciate that it is consistent from one vintage to the next. Henry of Pelham first plantings of Baco Noir date back to 1984 and they continue to be one of the largest growers in Ontario. Their Baco Noir vineyards are located in the Short Hills Bench appellation in the Niagara Peninsula.

If you aren't familiar with Baco Noir, it is medium bodied, soft and mellow. I chose it for Thanksgiving because it is extremely turkey friendly! Similar to Pinot Noir or Gamay, it doesn't overpower the turkey and can stand up to the wide spectrum of flavours on the Thanksgiving table from roasted yams to savoury stuffing and gravy.
