Field Stone Black Currant Dessert wine

Reviewed on February 15, 2021

Field Stone Dessert winery is located in Strathmore, Alberta and is Alberta's 1st estate winery. Field Stone is a fruit winery. In other words, they make wine with fruit other than grapes. At Field Stone, use raspberries, black currants, saskatoons, rhubarb, strawberries and cherries.

Before opening Fieldstone Fruit Winery in 2005, the Gill family operated a U-Pick orchard. They have 50 acres of mature bushes. All of the wines are made of 100% Alberta fruit. 75% of which are grown on the estate. Marvin Gill is the winemaker, and their consulting winemaker is Dominic Rivard, a fruit wine specialist and founding director of the Fruit Wines of Canada Association.

I selected their black currant dessert wine which is a fortified wine. There are many ways you can drink this wine. If you have it on its own, treat it like a white wine - serve it chilled and pour 2 ounces into a white wine glass. It is also very good mixed with vodka for a martini or in a cocktail (more info on my blog page). The balance of flavours in this wine is very impressive. I love the woodsy character of the black currants!

Cheese partners = Corsu Vecchiu (creamy sheep's cheese) and Bleu d'Auvergne (mild blue cheese).
